Who is Matthew though? His story is found within three gospels and he is also mentioned in Acts (Matthew 9:9-13; 10:3; Mark 2:14; 3:18; Luke 5:27-29; 6:15; Acts 1:13). He is called Levi in the gospels of Mark and Luke. This leads many scholars to believe that Matthew is a new name he is given when he meets Jesus, much like Saul was later called Paul after he met Jesus (Acts 13:9). The name Matthew means, “Gift of God.” It is fitting he is only called Matthew in the gospel that bears his name.
